5 tips to get the perfect Bridesmaid dress

Hi guys, summer is finally here!

Was it just me or you too were on a countdown for Summer?!
What an amazing season! So light, so fresh! And so so happy.

I specially love when I get invited to summer weddings! Do you?
I can't express how much I love going to summer weddings. And inspired by this love today I am going to talk about Bridesmaid Dresses . Shall we?

First, a  few disclaimers: I did not receive any dresses to talk about this company. If you want to send me a dress, I will wear it proudly though. ;)

Second, these are tips me and my mom agree with. It may not be your taste, and that's ok. Follow your heart and do what you LOVE! It's your wedding.

My Idea here was to give a basic guide to the ones that are starting to plan their weddings and have no clue how to pick the bridesmaid's dresses.

5. Check if the dress suits the place where the wedding is going to be held.

You know that morning weddings should have different attire than night weddings. I am not going to talk about that. Sequin night, light fabrics day. No news there.

I am going to talk about the fixtures of the local that can affect  the colors of the dresses.

A little story: One day I went to a wedding with my mom in Brazil . The place where the wedding was held was in one of the most traditional (and old) churches in Rio.

Not sure if you are familiar with old catholic churches but if you ever went to Italy or Portugal you probably have seen it: they are not only dark but they also have a type of reddish GAS LIGHT fixtures the interior.

And that my friends, was the problem. The gorgeous purple dresses turned in a muddy brownish and they all looked awful. The bride didn't take into an account that the lights would change the colors of the dresses.

If the wedding is outdoors, you won't have that problem (the sun light is the best light!), but if your wedding is in an old church that has that kind of reddish or yellow gas lights, you'd better have in mind that the light might affect the color of the dresses.

In many movies the costume designer often get a sample of the dress fabric to the location to check if the light is going to affect the costume. If you can't do that, you can print the sample the website gives you on a paper and simply check on the church if it gets affected. If the colors "change" with the light on the paper, chances are your dress may be affected too.

Not only lighting can affect the color of the dresses: glass windows, pools and reflective surfaces (like sequin or mirrored tables) can reflect lights and give an weird (or gorgeous) effect.

Another thing you should be aware is for Wind! Whenever the wedding is outdoors you should be aware of that. On a beach, for example, chances are it can get windy, specially at twilight. Avoid dresses that are not wind-friendly.

4. Don't know what color to pick? Try the color of the year!

Marsala is a type of red wine made in Sicily and it's the color of the year.
An universal color, the Marsala looks on every skin tone. And both men and women consider it flattering, attractive, earthy and sophisticated.

It can vary in the shade but to be a Marsala it should be a reddish type of burgundy, or as described by the Pantone website: a red-brown wine.

3. Does the Color of the dress suit the time of the wedding? The Daytime x Nightime brides

I tend to never say "this is right" and "this is wrong" when it comes to weddings, because my taste my not be yours... and it's not because one thing is a trend right now that you have to like it. You don't!

Our styles can be different and it's an awesome thing!

You can wear every color in any hour of the day and any kind of weather, however most people agree that some colors shades are more "Daytime-like" rather than "Evening-like".

Of course the shape and fabric of the dress will always affects with it feels like a day or night dress....While yellow is usually a color associated with daytime while dark shades, like black and navy, are  usually associated with the night.

Baby blue, lilac and white are colors than can be worn either daytime and nighttime.

You can wear a little sparkle being day or night.
The eyeshadow High Tide from colour pop is a good example of what to wear.

 2. Check if the dress looks good in all bridesmaids as a group.

Women have different bodies and different tastes, and that's all good, until you ask them to pick themselves their dress and that they all have to agree on the same model.

They don't have to be all alike, you can mix and match, but in the end of the day, they have to look good together (More tips to mix match here). Forget everything you know about the weddings in the past, specially the 80's ones.

"Brides take note: Dressing your maids each in a different color will make them look unique -- but not necessarily in a good way." by Ugly bridesmaid

Well, sometimes, it can be a disaster! I usually don't like the rainbow approach, however, It can be gorgeous! As a matter of fact, it's a 2015 trend for spring bridesmaid.

Take a look at this lovely party!

1. Check if the dress matches your bridesmaid's style. Pay attention to her comfort... her body type... if the shade is flattering on her skin tone.

The 80's are a scar on most family wedding albums. Geez! What were we thinking?!

i would want my face whited out too! man how the 80's loved their poofy sleeves!

Before you pick your bridesmaid dress, promise her you won't do anything like the above  to her! No ugly colors, no awkward lengths, no puffy sleeves and no bows on the butt.

LOL you can even  put it on paper to ask her to be your bridesmaid. It's kinda like a contract, isn't it? These lovely cards can be bought or hand made.

But back to the subject: I think you have to think about your bridesmaid taste and comfort before you decide what she should wear.  One example:

I am not going to say anything bad about this bridal party because.... they all look lovely. However.....

Bridesmaids in pant suits.

You HAVE to consider your bridesmaid's body type and personal taste. I, personally would be SO MAD of wearing a jumpsuit like that AND having to take a picture of my behind.

First, that color is not flattering to my skin tone: I will look grayish with that color, and second.... well, two words: Brazilian butt... :)

I would fell a lot more confident on wearing a dress to a picture like this. So talk to your bridesmaid and figure the style together.

You probably already know what she likes to wear, so ask her about what she would feel comfortable to wear during the entire day /night! For instance: busty girls, like myself , might feel more comfortable wearing her bra under her dress, and that means no to strapless.

Small breasted women may feel more confident with the model, but that is no rule, so talk to them to understand their needs.

And one more tip, that you might already know: Check if her dress matches yours!

You don't have to be matchy-matchy but if you dress in bohemian style, we kinda expect your bridesmaids to be as well.

In case you want to check out the website I got the pictures from, it's the Aisle Style.Their website has tons of other styles of dresses and they can custom make a dress in any shape, size and color you'd like.
